Scrappy Cross Baby Quilt and 5 FQ Challenge

I am not one to shy away from Instagram challenges, and so the concept of a 5 fat quarter challenge excited me to whip up a baby quilt for a dear neighbor’s first child.

I narrowed the choices down to 2 bundles of 5 with similar tones.  The first is a simple set of blues and whites, decidedly masculine and can hold up well in a room with navy, burgundy and classic rich colors.

The second bundle adds more color and spoke to me as blending baby – toddler – boy.

At the end of the day, I felt the quilt needed the pops of colors and went with a modified version of the second bundle. I kept 4 “colored” quarters with navy and / or reds.  This resulted in 4 “bright” fat quarters used for the main quilt and instead of one background, 4 low volume fat quarters were used.

I had my eye on the Scrappy Cross  design by Bonjour Quilts for some time.  I sized up the instructions to make the blocks finish at 18 inches.  I am glad I pieced a practice block first as my math work the first time around needed some work.  Shout out to Pattern Designers as it ain’t easy crunching all those measurements into a quilt!

I’m in love with how it came out.  It is fun, playful and the low volume really popped the bright reds and navy blues.  I quilted it with very subtle wavy lines, mostly because I was challenged with getting it done.   In hindsight, I would not change this as it seems to compliment the quilt without being over-bearing.  Swings + Scrappy Cross

I missed the deadline for the 5 fat quarter challenge but all was not lost.  I did find, for the backing, this great frog print which had the poison dart frogs loved by the Dad of family.  Aren’t they cute?

This quilt finished at 38 x 38.  Another great project where I just might need to make me one!

    1. Thank you Jessica! I had never made a practice block either but I’ve also never sized up a pattern. 🙂 The practice block will also become a pillow. I’ll post it when finished!
