I Wish You a Merry Quilt-Along First Block

A new QAL has started, hurrah!  I love that this one jump starts the holiday projects and it is paced every two weeks; just my speed.  It is hosted by the Inquiring Quilter and you can find the details here…IWishYouaMerryQAL.

My fabric selection is Christmas on Brambleberry Ridge by Michael Miller.  I am pulling from my holiday stash for fillers as needed, though the Brambleberry Ridge bundle is plentiful on its own.  I love the richness of the colors and have been saving it for just such occasion!

First block up was the Snowflake block sponsored by Vanda at Quilt in Piece.  Having never appliqued, I had a great time taking my time cutting, fusing and sewing this block together.

Vanda provides a great pattern and instructions to follow.  I decided to use her “quilt as you go” approach given this QAL finishes so close to the holidays.  I figure I’ll just need to assemble and bind basically and have a Merry quilt for most of December!

This particular block used appliques which I hadn’t done before.  I enjoyed the cutting, fusing and sewing this block, to my surprise!

I did simple straight stitching around the flakes for the quilting.  I haven’t decided yet how to quilt the background fabric.  Do any suggestions come to your mind?
